I don't want to bash our First Lady, but I agree with Kartina Szish of Nonsociety and Pink Memo. Not because of her size in this photo and she is no doubt wearing high-end brands - but look at her in comparison to these other women of status. Sleek and put together - ignore the photo shopping. I don't see Michelle Obama as a universal style icon, but a style icon for working mothers or soccer moms.

Left to right: Princess Letizia of Spain , French first lady Carla Bruni, our own first lady Michelle Obama.
Photo shopped though it appears to be, it’s still an interesting juxtaposition.
That said, though Michelle Obama wears top-tier, expensive labels such as Jason Wu, Thakoon, Narciso Rodriguez and Azzedine Alaia (occasionally mixed with J. Crew) and has been called a “style icon,” I disagree. Intelligent, yes. A great mom, yes. A strong woman, yes. But a style icon? No. And, this has nothing to do with the size of one’s dress.
